Frequently Asked Questions

Should I clean or polish my silver & gold?

In general, you should avoid cleaning or polishing coins, bars, and rounds. For jewelry, use an ultrasonic cleaner with a mild solution. If you must clean tarnished silver, use a solution of boiling water with torn aluminum foil and baking soda for about one minute. Alternatively, you can use warm water and just a drop of mild detergent. Be aware that cleaning coins can reveal hidden damage and may result in a lower grading.

Do you buy plated silver or silverware?

We do not buy or sell plated silver, silverware, or similar items such as tea sets. There is very little actual silver used in the plating process, with most pieces containing less than an hundredth of an ounce of precious metal content. Unfortunately, most silverplate is very common and worth about $2/pound as scrap material. In the Huntsville Alabama region, your best bet for recycling scrap silverplate is SA Recycling.

Do you buy sterling silver?

We buy and sell only select minted items, such as sterling silver bars and coins from the Franklin Mint. Ingots, certified pieces, minted sovereigns, or fine jewelry with a luxury pedigree such as Tiffany are considered on a case-by-case basis. Feel free to give us a call and let us know what you have!

Why should I invest in gold and silver?

It’s the investment you can hold! More importantly, it holds value. There is a fundamental reason it has always been considered “real money”. We could write a whole book on this topic, give us a call or come to the store and we’ll be happy to discuss! You might also enjoy reading this piece on the topic.

What is 14K / 18K gold if it's not real gold?

Pure gold is 24K and is far too soft for use in jewelry. All the other designations up to 23K indicate how much alloy metals have been added to the pure gold. 18K yellow gold for example is 75% pure gold, as it is an alloy of 18 parts gold and 6 parts base metals like silver, copper, and zinc. White gold uses nickel instead of silver, and rose gold uses more copper with less silver.

What is .925 silver / sterling silver?

Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of base metals, most commonly copper. This is why sterling is commonly referred to as .925 or 925 silver, and the piece is nearly always stamped as such. While there is a market for sterling silver, our interests are limited to minted items such as coins and sterling silver bars. Sterling should not be confused with silverplate

Do you accept credit cards?

We do take credit cards! A lot of shops do not take credit card payments and most websites charge extra for both credit cards and debit cards.

Do you handle estate sales?

We offer free appraisals for estates large and small, available by appointment. Please give us a call and we can discuss your needs and availability.
